Background

On December 6, 2010, the C-CORE led CECR proposal Leading Operational Observations and Knowledge for the North (LOOKNorth) was awarded $7.1 million by the Government of Canada from its 2010 Centres of Excellence for Commercialization and Research (CECR) competition following a highly competitive process.

Collaboratively, on January 17th the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced funding for LOOKNorth in the amount of $2.0 million.  This was provided by the Research and Development Corporation and the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development’s OceansTech Intelligence Program equally.

C-CORE acts as the host for LOOKNorth, providing access to technical resources, remote sensing expertise, and facilities.  The Board of Directors for C-CORE/LOOKNorth and the staff of LOOKNorth undertake a conflict of interest agreement to ensure impartiality in the operations of LOOKNorth.

Over the life of LOOKNorth it is expected that C-CORE and private sector partners will contribute $5.9 million.

LOOKNorth is the only centre in Atlantic Canada to be so designated, despite many previous attempts.  It is one of only 22 CECRs in Canada.
